John Oliver Mocks America’s Favorite Fall Treat: Pumpkin Spice Lattes (Video)

“Pumpkin spice lattes taste like a candle tastes,” says HBO comedian of what seasonal drink’s critics are all thinking

Fall is in full swing, and so is America’s obsession with all things pumpkin spice.

Although HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” was on hiatus this week, John Oliver found the time to tear into the seasonal flavor most commonly found at Starbucks.

“It’s that special time of year where we voluntarily imbibe pumpkin spice lattes — the coffee that tastes like a candle,” Oliver said in a web-only segment (above). “And I don’t mean it tastes like a candle smells, pumpkin spice lattes taste like a candle tastes.”

If viewers’ taste buds happen to enjoy pumpkin-scented candle wax, than they should be happy to hear Oliver’s revelation about the “pumpkin-flavored science goo” that is used to create the signature seasonal taste.

“The worst part is nobody wants anything pumpkin flavored from December through August. And here’s how I know: You can have it whenever you want,” Oliver said. “That bottle of pumpkin-flavored science goo sits behind the counter of Starbucks all year round, never aging like Ryan Seacrest.”

“Last Week Tonight” returns with a new episode on Sunday.
