Joseph Kosinski to Direct ‘The Trials of White Boy Rick’ for Universal

Biopic of a teenage drug kingpin is based on the book by Evan Hughes

Universal Pictures has optioned “The Trials of White Boy Rick” by Evan Hughes with Joseph Kosinski attached to direct, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Set in 1980s Detroit, “The Trials of White Boy Rick” follows the true story of a teenager who was arrested on suspicion of being a drug kingpin who rose through the ranks of New York City, and later claims to have actually been undercover for the FBI since he was 14.

Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark will produce under their Universal-based Bluegrass Films banner. Senior vice president of production Erik Baiers and director of development Sara Scott will oversee the project for Universal. Michael Clear will oversee production on behalf of Bluegrass Films.

Kosinski, who directed “Tron: Legacy” and “Oblivion,” is represented by CAA. He is also repped by attorney David Matlof of Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof & Fishman, LLP.
