Laura Benanti Apologizes for Melania Trump Sketch on Colbert Election Special (Video)

“If I had anticipated this outcome I wouldn’t have done it,” comic writes on Twitter

Laura Benanti had a lot of fun playing Melania Trump on Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” over the course of this election season. She didn’t have any fun doing it on Election Night, however.

The comedian reprised the role Tuesday on Showtime special “Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night Democracy’s Season Finale: Who’s Going to Clean up this S***.” The Hillary Clinton supporter immediately regretted her participation, given the turn the night ended up taking.

“People saying the Melania sketch wasn’t funny last night … I know,” she wrote Wednesday on Twitter. “I’m so sorry. If I had anticipated this outcome I wouldn’t have done it.”

Benanti was clearly uncomfortable throughout the sketch. After a particularly rough start, she put on as happy a face as a distraught individual playing a purposely plastic character possibly could. It didn’t help, of course, that considering Trump was on the verge of victory, the jokes and setup of the sketch made little sense.
