In the latest attempt to remain competitive with rival Netflix, Blockbuster will offer instant access to its video library through home and portable devices, the company announced today. Through a partnership with Sonic Solutions, Blockbuster will offer over 10,000 movies for pay-per-view rental and sale on PCs, cell phones, portable media players, Internet-connected televisions and Blu-ray disc players, reports CNet, and is considering an unlimited subscription plan. The move is an effort to bring the movie rental company's presence in the digital world into line with its brick-and-mortar ubiquity in the physical world, said CEO and chairman Jim Keyes. Blockbuster is hoping the partnership will help the company keep pace with Netflix, which recently expanded past its DVD-by-mail service to offer streaming on Microsoft's Xbox 360, Blu-Ray players and TiVo digital video recorders.
