The Los Angeles Police Department has closed a missing person investigation into the whereabouts of Scientologist Shelly (Michelle) Miscavige.

"We have ruled the missing person report unfounded and closed the case," an LAPD representative told TheWrap.

The investigation was opened after a missing person report was filed on Wednesday. Reports have alleged that it was filed by former Church of Scientology member, "King of Queens" actress and former "The Talk" co-host Leah Remini (pictured left with Shelly).

"This ill-advised, ludicrous self-promotion and the media inquiries it generated caused an inexcusable distraction for the LAPD in an era when the time and resources of its officers are stretched thin each day," a Church of Scientology rep told TheWrap.

"Creating this unnecessary burden for law enforcement was even more irresponsible given the entire episode was nothing more than a publicity stunt for Ms. Remini, cooked up with unemployed, anti-religious zealots who blog on the fringe of the Internet. Sadly, rather than move on with her life and career, Ms. Remini has aligned herself with a handful of untrustworthy, lunatic tabloid sources who obsessively harass the Church to advance their selfish agendas."

Earlier on Thursday, an LAPD rep confirmed to the TheWrap that it was investigating a missing person report filed on Miscavige, who is married to the Church's leader David Miscavige.

Remini's rep didn't immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment on the missing person report.

According to blogger Tony Ortega, Remini — who recently left the controversial religion — filed the report after Shelly had not been seen in public in six years. The writer goes on to report that David's attendance at Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' wedding in 2006 without his wife piqued Remini's curiosity. And when she asked where Shelly was, she was told she didn't have the rank to ask such a question.

News of Remini's departure from the Church broke in July. She would then issue a statement of thanks to those who had supported her in the decision.

Later, she told People Magazine, "I'm not about to shut up" and "people should be allowed to question things."

Why was it unfounded? Did the police locate Shelly Miscavige? If not, then she is still a missing person. It sounds to me as if the Scientologists somehow got to the police department, whether through bribes, threats, or connections I don't know.

Why not just because she's not missing?… Doesn't go well with your agenda?
