Good news for a talented digital editor whose last two jobs ended abruptly: Gabriel Snyder, the former Gawker and Newsweek editor, has landed at the Atlantic, where he’ll be in charge of relaunching the Atlantic Wire, the magazine’s online news aggregator.
Bob Cohn, editorial director of the Atlantic’s digital division, called Snyder a “savvy web thinker who understands how to combine speed, voice, and depth to create great journalism and build audiences.”
It’s a good time to be joining that ship. Earlier this month, the Atlantic recently announced something it hadn’t in anyone’s memory: it actually turned a profit.
Snyder, who was ousted by Gawker chief Nick Denton last February in favor of current editor Remy Stern, left his post as Newsweek Digital’s executive editor last summer, shortly before its sale to Sidney Harman was to be finalized.
“For reasons which I'm not too clear on … I am being replaced as editor-in-chief of Gawker,” Snyder wrote in his Gawker exit memo. “Honesty is Gawker's only virtue, so it seems inappropriate to engage in the usual corporate euphemisms of ‘wanting to explore new new opportunities’ or ‘take a larger role in the company’ or ‘spend more time with my family’ (though eighteen-hour days and seven-day work weeks do take their toll on personal relationships), so I'll put this as plainly as we'd report any other masthead ouster: I am being canned.”
