The Awl -- a website launched in April by ex-Gawker scribes Choire Sicha and Alex Balk with the tagline "Be less stupid" -- has been quietly building a nice little following. (A thank you to its readers post on Friday drew 115 comments, for one measure.)

It also accepts advertising -- some of it auto-served, which can put the ads and the Awl's breezy commentary at odds.
