On Tuesday, the blog Journalistics published a list ranking the top 25 newspapers on Twitter, based on their follower counts. The New York Times, with more than 2.6 million followers, is by far the most-followed newspaper brand on Twitter, with the Wall Street Journal, at 464,591, a distant second).
I decided to do my own list for magazines, which generally have more followers than newspapers do. There are 11 magazine brands with more than 500,000 Twitter followers, while the U.S. newspaper industry has just one (the Times).
A few notes before we get to the list:
>> I used the official Twitter feeds for each publication, and did not include related feeds of founders (no Oprah Winfrey or Martha Stewart) or popular writers.
>> I stuck with U.S. magazines for the most part.
>> The follower counts were taken between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
>> Some of the biggest magazines in terms of print circulation have a shockingly puny presence on Twitter. AARP The Magazine -- which touts itself as “the world's largest-circulation magazine” with a circulation of over 24 million -- has just 358 followers. (Yes, you read that correctly). Good Housekeeping boasts a paid circulation north of 4.4 million, yet has just 4,683 followers on Twitter.
