“The Young Ones” is another entry into the hot dystopian genre, but this one sees Michael Shannon and Nicholas Hoult in a desperate battle for water — and the fate of Elle Fanning — in the film’s first French-subtitled trailer.
Directed by Jake Paltrow, the sci-fi thriller is set in a dry, dry desert world in which water is precious. Kodi Smit-McPhee is the kid at the center of it all, fighting for survival in this desolate and dangerous world. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, so it’s no “Hunger Games”-style action flick, but seems to be more understated with quiet tension and intensity subbing in for special effects.
At the heart of the story seems to be Fanning’s character Mary, the daughter of Shannon’s character, who becomes a love interest to Hoult’s neighboring rancher, the seemingly dangerous Flem Lever. Her dad quite clearly, and perhaps rightly, is wary of her dating such a character.
Screen Media picked up the film for US distribution but has not yet set a release date.
