Chris Hemsworth and Crew Battle Moby Dick in ‘In the Heart of the Sea’ Trailer (Video)

Director Ron Howard’s telling of the true whale tale features a terrifying look at the famed sea creature

Chris Hemsworth and his crew of sailors on an 1820 expedition on the ship Essex fall under attack by a sperm whale miles away from land, in the new trailer for Ron Howard‘s upcoming “In the Heart of the Sea.”

“We were headed for the edge of sanity,” Hemsworth’s character Owen Chase says in the teaser video, released Thursday by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures. “Like we were apparitions, phantoms.”

After the whale destroys their ship, Hemsworth and his crew fight for survival, stranded at sea for 90 days.

As calm waters turn violent, the trailer ramps up in speed and sound, featuring quick cuts of the destruction with a driving score to match.

The true tale, which spawned the classic “Moby Dick,” has been adapted from from Nathaniel Philbrick’s novel “Sea.” The film also stars Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson, Tom Holland, Frank Dillane, Sam Keeley and Ben Whishaw, who portrays author Herman Melville.

“In the Heart of the Sea” will be released on March 13, 2015.
