"Guardians of the Galaxy" coming in 2014

Marvel Studios announced release dates for three of its upcoming films, the sequels to “Captain America” and ‘Thor,” as well as "Guardians of the Galaxy."

The next “Captain America,” subtitled “The Winter Soldier,” will open April 4, 2014. The Russo brothers, who directed “You, Me and Dupree,” are handling those duties for the Chris Evans-led cast.

The next Thor, “The Dark World,” will bow Nov. 8, 2013. Alan Taylor, known for his work on HBO shows including “Game of Thrones” and “The Sopranos,” is directing with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the eponymous superhero. Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins are just two of the leading names in the cast, which welcomes Zachary Levi this time around.

Marvel had numerous choices to flesh out the team, but studio chief Kevin Feige (left, with writer Steven Wright) said this one will consist of Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon.

Marvel opened the panel with a video montage showing the progression of its films since the formation of the studio, dating back to the first “Iron Man."

“I thought it would do a better job of thanking this crowd, this audience for everything that’s happened to Marvel Studios the last five years,” Feige said.

The montage ended by saying “phase two begins now” and Feige introduced a new concept for audiences to salivate over, "Ant-Man." Edgar Wright is directing, and the “Attack the Block” filmmaker teased audiences with a very rough clip of the film, for which he and Joe Cornish wrote the script.
