Netflix’s reboot of Norman Lear‘s “One Day at a Time” has added newcomer Marcel Ruiz to its cast, TheWrap has learned exclusively.

The 13-episode reimagining of the classic TV series will revolve around a Cuban-American family. The series will follow a recently separated former military mom (Justina Machado) navigating a new single life while raising her radical teenage daughter and socially adept tween son, with the “help” of her old-school Cuban-born mom (Rita Moreno) and a friends-without-benefits building manager.

Ruiz’s character, Alex, is described as a too-cute-for-his-own-good Cuban-American tween, more preppy than his sister, but also more vain. He’s the baby of the family and not above working the “good kid” angle.

Mike Royce and Gloria Calderon Kellett wrote the series and serve as executive producers along with Lear and Michael Garcia. Brent Miller will serve as co-executive producer.

“One Day at a Time” is produced by Act III Productions, Inc., Snowpants Productions and Small Fish Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Ruiz is represented by the Osbrink Agency and DePaz Management.
