KOMO-TV helicopter was attempting to take off when it crashed

A crash involving a KOMO news helicopter in Seattle has left two dead and one in critical condition, the Seattle fire department said Tuesday morning.

The incident, which occurred near the Seattle Space Needle, also involved three car fires, the department added.

The department reported that a man approximately 37 years of age was transported by medics to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. The man had been in one of the cars involved in the incident, but managed to free himself from the vehicle.

The Seattle Police Department said that the incident is being investigated by the FAA and NTSB, with the investigation expected to “continue for many hours.” KOMO reported that the crash took place at takeoff.

Traffic approaching the Seattle center has been blocked.

Local station KING 5 reported that the news helicopter crashed next to Fisher Plaza, where KOMO is located, at 7:45 a.m.
