‘OITNB’ Stars Laura Gomez, Alysia Reiner, Jackie Cruz Talk Diversity, Maggie Gyllenhaal Ageism Shocker (Video)

“This show is breaking the rules in every sense of the word,” actress says in new episode of TheWrap’s “Drinking With the Stars'” in New York City

“Orange Is the New Black” stars Laura Gomez, Alysia Reiner and Jackie Cruz came on TheWrap’s first New York episode of “Drinking With the Stars” to discuss the show’s diversity, as well as Season 4.

Season 3 premiered in June, but the cast is already filming Season 4 of the Netflix Original Series. Reiner tells TheWrap that the enormous size of the cast has even broken records.

“There are actually 96 recurring characters on this show,” says Reiner, “when we won the SAG Awards, we broke records of how many actual awards they had to give out.”

The three women also discuss Maggie Gyllenhaal’s recent statement, where she told TheWrap that she at 37, she “was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55.”

“I think the fact that we’re in this particular show and we have this brilliant creator, Jenji Kohan, this show is breaking the rules in every sense of the word,” Gomez says. “We not only have all these amazing female actors holding the show together, but it’s so many races, so many shapes and colors, it’s just amazing. But also, behind the scenes.”

Cruz plays Marisol “Flaca” Gonzales and is one of the hispanic inmates. Similarly, Gomez portrays Blanca Flores, who works in the kitchen. Reiner, however, plays Natalie Figueroa, the Executive Assistant to the Warden before she was caught for embezzling money from the Department of Corrections.

“Orange is The New Black” was just nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Drama Series category. The show’s Uzo Aduba was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series, whereas Pablo Schreiber scored a Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series nomination.
