“Pretty Little Liars” hit an 18-month high in total viewers with Tuesday’s highly-anticipated identity reveal of the mysterious character “A.”

The ABC Family midseason finale hauled in 3.1 million total viewers; it also reached a near two-year high in its main demos, adults 18-34 and women in the same age range. Tuesday’s “PLL” had a 2.0 rating among adults 18-34. Among just women 18-34, the show pulled a 3.4 rating.

“Last night’s ‘Pretty Little Liars’ finale was a true Twitter triumph. ABC Family continues to innovate in how they encourage fan participation across social media, never content to let their social strategy stagnate,” Jenn Deering Davis, editor-in-chief, Union Metrics said in an ABC Family announcement. “And it shows — the summer finale of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ shattered records by generating more tweets than ever, and not just during the episode itself.

“Before the finale even started yesterday, ‘Pretty Little Liars’ fans had already posted more than two million tweets about the show, breaking previous all-day records,” she added. “‘Pretty Little Liars’ still has one of, if not the most, active and engaged Twitter fandoms in existence.”

“Pretty Little Liars” has been a social media force since essentially its inception — and last night’s shocker, which explained “A’s” secret existence with the help of a gender transition — did not disappoint on Twitter.

Per Nielsen’s Twitter TV Ratings, the midseason finale was the top tweeted TV series telecast of the summer, and even the third most tweeted cable TV series episode on record. The “A” unveiling amassed more than 1.6 million tweets, or 50 percent of all Twitter TV Tweet activity on Tuesday.

Those tweets were seen by a Twitter TV audience of 6.2 million unique users, generating more than 68 million Twitter TV impressions. In the process, “Pretty Little Liars” surpassed 3 million Twitter followers.

“Pretty Little Liars” is produced by Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television and is executive produced by I. Marlene King, Oliver Goldstick, Leslie Morgenstein and Joseph Dougherty. The series stars Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Tyler Blackburn, Lucy Hale, Ian Harding, Laura Leighton, Shay Mitchell, Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse.
