Relativity, Weinstein Co. Negotiating to Acquire Troubled ‘Jane Got a Gun’

Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton star in the Western

Relativity Media and the Weinstein Company have emerged from a heated bidding war in exclusive negotiations to jointly acquire U.S. distribution rights to Gavin O'Connor's Western "Jane Got a Gun," an individual with the project has told TheWrap.

Joint acquisitions have happened in the past, though the latest distribution deal represents a unique partnership that will see both companies bring different strengths and resources to the table.

Natalie Portman stars as the title character alongside Joel Edgerton and Ewan McGregor.

CAA brokered the deal, which is for a wide release.

Producers include Scott Steindorff, Aleen Keshishian, Regency Boies of Straight Up Films and Portman, who produced through her Handsomecharlie Films banner. Brian Duffield wrote the initial script, which was significantly changed after O'Connor came on at the final hour to replace original director Lynne Ramsay.

Michael Fassbender was originally set to star alongside Portman and Edgerton. Fassbender then exited, prompting Edgerton to take his role and Jude Law to join the cast as the villain. Law left the project after Ramsey's departure, and Bradley Cooper was briefly attached before scheduling conflicts forced McGregor to take over his role.

The deal was first reported by Deadline.
