Universal Cable Productions to develop best-selling sci-fi story as event series
Universal Cable Productions has optioned Robert Charles Wilson Novel, “Spin,” for a TV event series.
“Northern Exposure” actor Rob Morrow via his Bits And Pieces production company (“Maze”) and movie producer Leslie Urdang of Olympus Pictures (“Beginners,” “Rabbit Hole”) have signed on as executive producers.
The project is one of the first under UCP's new development executive vice president Dawn Olmstead, who joined in January.
“‘Spin’ is beloved in the sci-fi world for its dynamic characters and engaging storylines. We're excited to bring this masterpiece to life with Rob Morrow and the team at Olympus Pictures,” Olmstead said in a statement. “It is the type of critically acclaimed material that we're seeking to continue diversifying UCP's slate and expand our reach.”
“Spin” follows three children stuck on Earth as the outside universe speeds up in time. In five years, scientists learn that the sun will destroy Earth. Meanwhile, the children go their separate ways to stop Earth's demise. Will they reunite in time to save the planet?
Morrow added, “I picked up ‘Spin’ as a holiday read with the notion of reading something for pleasure and instantly knew it had epic zeitgeist appeal. This is a giant fascinating ride that is wholly entertaining, portentous and will speak to all generations worldwide. I'm thrilled to team up with friend Leslie Urdang and everyone at Universal Cable Productions.”
Currently, Morrow's Bits And Pieces is working on a new half hour cable series with the Weinstein Company. Urdang's Olympus Pictures is currently in production on the Nikole Beckwith film “Stockholm, PA,” and the feature “Family Fang” directed by and starring Jason Bateman and Nicole Kidman.
