The History Channel has found the creative team behind its remake of “Roots,” an Emmy award-winning miniseries that first aired on ABC in 1977.

Allen Hughes (“The Book of Eli”), of the directing duo the Hughes Brothers, will direct the event series, as well as executive produce alongside Mark Wolper and Marc Toberoff.

Screenwriting duo Mark Rosenthal and Larry Konner (“The Jewel of the Nile”) will write the project,  which is an A+E Studios production in association with Marc Toberoff and The Wolper Organization for History.

History acquired the rights to the 12-hour miniseries in Nov. 2013 from Wolper, the son of original “Roots” executive producer, David L. Wolper, as well as the estate of author Alex Haley, who wrote the book the miniseries is based on, “Roots: The Saga of an American Family.”

The network has not yet announced an air date.
