Scarlett Johansson Calls Criticism Over Woody Allen Sex Abuse Allegations 'Irresponsible'

The “Captain America: Winter Soldier” star, called out in an open letter from Dylan Farrow, says the situation is “all guesswork”

Scarlett Johansson has spoken out about the accusations of sexual abuse aimed at Woody Allen, and said that criticism of her and others by Dylan Farrow is “irresponsible.”

The “Captain America: Winter Soldier” actress was among several in Hollywood called out last month in an open letter written by Allen's estranged daughter, who says the director molested her as a child, for continuing to work with him despite the allegations.

“I think it's irresponsible to take a bunch of actors that will have a Google alert on and to suddenly throw their name into a situation that none of us could possibly knowingly comment on,” Johansson told the U.K.'s Guardian. “That just feels irresponsible to me.”

The actress has appeared in three of Allen's movies, “Match Point,” “Scoop” and “Vicky Christina Barcelona.”

What does she think about the backlash against Allen?

“I'm unaware that there's been a backlash,” she said. “I think he'll continue to know what he knows about the situation, and I'm sure the other people involved have their own experience with it. It's not like this is somebody that's been prosecuted and found guilty of something, and you can then go, ‘I don't support this lifestyle or whatever.’ I mean, it's all guesswork.”

Johannson has said she's a big fan of Allen's in the past, telling Vogue in 2007 that “I'd hem his pants if he asked me to.” She was responding to praise from the director, who called her “criminally sexy” and said that “while she is a much stronger actress in every way, there is a tiny bit of Marilyn Monroe in her zaftig humidity.”

The actress was in Glasgow, Scotland, filming Jonathan Glazer‘s low-budget sci-fi movie “Under the Skin.” She'll next be seen in Disney's Marvel aforementioned superhero sequel “Captain America: Winter Soldier,” which opens in the U.S. on April 4.

Maybe not every actor is vain enough to have their own names on google alert, Scarlett….

If you're an actor or any person about whom lots of things are said, probably a good idea to know what's out there. Clooney and the like may not look at his/their alerts personally, but someone on their staffs does. Sure, it's part vanity, but it's also part common sense…kind of like keeping an eye on your credit report.

  • Kathie Johnson

Always thought she wasn't the brightest she's proved it now

    • Sara

Hmmm…she's not the brightest because she said probably not a good idea to comment on something about which she's not completely informed? not the brightest because she thought it irresponsible to bring a bunch of actors in on a situation with which they were not involved?

Sounds like some of the most intelligent things anyone has said…and I'm not an SJ fan.

From his 1992 “no questions barred” interview on 60 Minutes to his 2014 “final” comments on the subject in the New York Times, Allen has probably said all he can on a very sad and difficult story.

It always helps to stand up for someone when they are obviously helping your career and making you money. No one wants to say boo because he made too many actors careers even if he is a creep. Who marries their own daughter even if she is adopted and thinks it is ok? It is not far fetched he was molesting the others also. A very sad example of how much worse Hollywood has become when that has become acceptable behavior. I am happy to no longer support it from this day forward..

He didn't marry his own daughter, he married his girlfriend's adopted daughter. Creepy, yeah a little, but lots of Hwood relationships are creepy.

and the standard is beyond a shadow of a doubt, not “not far fetched”

There doesn't seem to be much backlash against Morgan Freeman for dating his own granddaughter or ‘kind of’ granddaughter'….

Oh shut up and have your baby!

She just likes being called sexy and better than Marilyn and I agree with Kathie Johnson's comment, “Not the brightest bulb.” Everything about Allen is out in the about: the sex pictures he took of his adopted daughter while she was still underage and left laying around, the hub bub about their relationship, then his marrying her!!! Hello!
