‘Shadowhunters’ Star Dominic Sherwood on Training to Chase Demons (Video)

“We had to train pretty fundamentally so that no one got hurt — but it didn’t stop me, as I got hurt anyway,” British actor says on latest episode of “Drinking With the Stars”

The sexy new supernatural series “Shadowhunters” premiered on Freeform (formerly ABC Family) Tuesday night, and dashing star Dominic Sherwood sat down with TheWrap to explain the show’s dark premise — and reveal the pitfalls of his character’s fancy sword work.

“A shadowhunter is a half angel-half human, who is bred to keep the demon world from the human world,” the British actor explained in the latest episode of “Drinking With the Stars.”

“It was very fun, it was every young actor’s dream to be like, ‘Here’s your sword.’ … We were playing with swords, and they glowed. It was incredible,” he explained, describing filming the fantasy series.

“We had to train pretty fundamentally so that no one got hurt — but it didn’t stop me, as I got hurt anyway,” said Sherwood, who plays Jace, a Shadowhunter living at the New York Institute with his adopted family.

The series is based on “The Mortal Instruments” books by Cassandra Clare and sticks pretty close to the original, according to Sherwood. “We didn’t change the characters at all, they are exactly how they are in the books, but we had to keep it fresh — not only for the people who have read the books but also for the new fans.

“We had to change some things so readers couldn’t just skip to the end of the books and see how it ends,” he added.

The production team also had to translate the stories from a book format to the small screen. While the stories weren’t written for TV “the way Season 1 ends is vaguely similar to how Book 1 ends,” Sherwood teased.

“Shadowhunters” also stars Isaiah Mustafa, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Katherine McNamara, Alberto Rosende and Harry Shum Jr.

“Shadowhunters” airs Tuesdays on Freeform at 9 p.m.
