Sienna Miller‘s role was cut from the new Johnny Depp film “Black Mass” that is slated to hit theaters later this month.

The film’s director Scott Cooper told the Boston Globe that Miller’s character, Catherine Greig, a girlfriend of Depp’s character Whitey Bulger, was removed from the final cut: “It came down to narrative choices.”

Miller spoke to the publication last year about how she prepared for her role of Greig, who lived with Bulger for 16 years and was sentenced to eight years in prison for helping Bulger escape from law enforcement officials.

“I shot for two weeks, it’s a really cameo,” she said, admitting that the role was minor compared to those of the other cast members. “It’s not a leading role. I had an amazing time working with Johnny Depp, who I think is extraordinary and Scott Cooper, the director, who’s made some amazing films as well. The story’s in the right hands and it was amazingly fun to come in.”

“Black Mass” stars Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Corey Stoll, Adam Scott and Peter Sarsgaard. The Warner Bros. film, which chronicles the true story of one of the most notorious criminals in U.S. history, will hit theaters on Sept. 18.
