Tom Holland, the star of “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” has been cast as Thomas Edison’s trusted colleague, Samuel Insull, in The Weinstein Company’s historical drama “The Current War,” TheWrap has learned.

The film also stars other superhero movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch (“Doctor Strange”), Michael Shannon (“Man of Steel”) and Nicholas Hoult (the “X-Men” series), as well as Katherine Waterston (“Inherent Vice,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”).

“The Current War” covers the contentious dispute between George Westinghouse (Shannon) and his rival Edison (Cumberbatch) over how to develop electricity for U.S. households. Waterson will play Westinghouse’s wife and Hoult will portray Nikola Tesla.

Michael Mitnick penned the screenplay about the two famed innovators’ battle over electricity in the late 1880s.

Filming is scheduled to begin in early December.

Holland is represented by WME and Curtis Brown Group.
