Directors David Fincher, Stephen Frears, David Mamet and Steven Soderbergh and actor Bryan Cranston are among the nominees in the Directors Guild of America’s 2013 television nominations, the DGA announced on Thursday.
Fincher was nominated for the first episode of Netflix’s “House of Cards” and Frears, Mamet and Soderbergh for the HBO movies “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight,” “Phil Spector” and “Behind the Candelabra” (above), respectively.
Cranston could particularly bask in the spotlight: The show in which he starred, “Breaking Bad,” landed two of the five Drama Series nominations, one for an episode he directed and one for an episode from series creator Vince Gilligan, while Cranston won a second nomination for directing an episode of “Modern Family.”

In the TV-movie and miniseries category, the three HBO films are competing with “Killing Kennedy” and “The Sound of Music Live!”
In drama series, the two “Breaking Bad” episodes are up against single episodes of “House of Cards,” “Homeland” and “Game of Thrones” (the infamous “Red Wedding” episode).
And in comedy series, “Modern Family” and “The Big Bang Theory” each received two nominations, while “30 Rock” received one.
Comic Louis C.K. received his second DGA nomination for his special “Louis C.K.: Oh My God.” He’s in the Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Special category, where he’ll be facing the formidable lineup of “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” director Joel Gallen, receiving his third DGA nomination; Tony Awards director Glen Weiss, receiving his 10th; Grammys director Louis J. Horvitz, receiving his 17th; and Oscars director Don Mischer, receiving his 18th.
