‘The 100’ Showrunner Previews Game-Changing Episode: ‘There Are Multiple Twists’

“Polaris, Polis, all of that was obviously geared toward telling this story in a bigger way,” Jason Rothenberg tells TheWrap

Episode 306 of “The 100” set up some huge questions which are set to be answered in episode 307.

“They’re connected, but I look at our show as a 16-parter each season,” showrunner Jason Rothenberg told TheWrap. “It’s highly serialized that way. Yeah, the end of 306 was designed to tee up the story of the 13th station, which we tell in flashback in this episode. Polaris, Polis, all of that was obviously geared toward telling this story in a bigger way.”

Flashbacks have been a staple of the show since the beginning, but just like in episodes past, the device will be used to move the story forward rather than retell an already known anecdote.

In this case, the flashbacks dig into the end of the world itself, and it all began way back in Season 1, when the 13th station Polaris was first mentioned.

“I knew in the beginning I wanted to tell the origin story of the show. I always thought it would be really cool to explain the events of the apocalypse and explain why the Ark came together and how it came together,” Rothenberg said. “What we try to do with flashback episodes, it’s usually something we’ve been talking about in the show but there’s a twist within. In this case there are multiple twists that justify going there and telling this story. We’re not just going there and showing people something they’ve already heard about and understand. We’re showing them something they’ve heard about and we are revealing the truth of it.”

“The 100” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
