CBS’s “The Dovekeepers” died a merciful death on Wednesday, when the special dipped from its already disappointing Tuesday premiere numbers.

ABC won primetime for the key demo; Fox’s “American Idol” gave that network a first place finish among total viewers.

The CW’s lineup slid from last week, though the network managed to stay above Telemundo and out of the basement.

ABC was first in ratings with a 1.9 rating/7 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, but third in total viewers with an average of 7 million, according to preliminary numbers. “The Middle” at 8 p.m. dipped to a 1.7/7 and 7.6 million viewers. “The Goldbergs” at 8:30 slipped to a 1.9/7 and 7.2 million viewers. “Modern Family” at 9 earned a 2.9/10 — the high for the night — and 9.3 million viewers. At 9:30, “Black-ish” rose 14 percent to a 2.4/8 and had 7.4 million viewers. At 10, “Nashville” got a 1.3/4 and 5.1 million viewers.

Fox was second in ratings with a 1.7/6 and first in viewers with 8.4 million. “Idol” was the only show on its primetime schedule.

NBC was third in ratings with a 1.4/5 and fourth in viewers with 6.5 million. “Mysteries of Laura” at 8 received a 1.0/4 and 6.4 million viewers. “Law & Order: SVU” at 9 posted a 1.5/5 and 6.3 million viewers. “Chicago P.D.” at 10 had a 1.6/5 and 6.9 million viewers.

CBS was fourth in ratings with a 1.3/4, but second in viewers with 7.4 million. “Survivor” at 8 got a 2.1/8 and night-high 9.5 million viewers. At 9, “The Dovekeepers” closed to a 0.9/3 — down 10 percent from Tuesday — and 6.4 million viewers.

Univision was fifth in ratings with a 1.1/4 and in viewers with 2.8 million.

The CW was sixth in ratings with a 0.7/2 and in viewers with 2 million. “Arrow” at 8 dipped to a 0.8/3 and 2.4 million viewers. “Supernatural” at 0.6/2 and 1.7 million viewers.

Telemundo was seventh in ratings with a 0.6/2 and in viewers with 1.4 million.
