‘This Is Us’: Go Inside the Song That Broke All of Our Hearts (Exclusive Video)

Episode director John Requa jokingly asked for “the greatest song of all time”

The most emotional episode of “This Is Us” was anchored by two different performances of a new original song written for the show, called “We Can Always Come Back to This.”

In this exclusive behind the scenes clip (above), series composer Siddhartha Khosla delves into the writing of the song, which was inspired by series creator Dan Fogelman’s script for the episode, “Memphis.”

On the show, “We Can Always Come Back to This” is a piece of music written by a young William (Jermel Nakia) for the band he’s in with his cousin Ricky (Brian Tyree Henry), who sings it live on stage.

“My direction from Dan and from [directors] John [Requa] and Glenn [Ficarra] was to write a Motown tune,” Khosla said. “I asked, do you have any direction? And John jokingly said, ‘Just write the greatest song of all time.’”

After being performed as part of the storyline on the show, a second version of the song, sung by Hannah Miller, plays over the closing scenes of the episode.

Both versions are now available as singles.

“This Is Us” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
