336 Films Qualify for Oscars in 2016

The number is an increase over last year’s total of 305, and marks the largest number of contenders in recent years

A total of 336 films have qualified for the 2016 Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Wednesday.

Alphabetically, the films range from “The Abolitionists” to “Zootopia,” which just edged “Zoolander 2” for the final spot on the list.

Competitively, they range from Oscars favorites “La La Land,” “Moonlight” and “Manchester by the Sea” to the less lauded likes of “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.”

Last year, 305 features qualified for the Oscars. In recent years, the previous high was 323 qualifying films in 2014, while 289 were eligible in 2013, 282 in 2012, 265 in 2011 and 248 in 2010.

To qualify, a film must open a seven-day commercial run in Los Angeles County between January 1 and December 31, 2016. Films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes, and cannot have been available on TV or on a streaming service prior to their theatrical debut. (Same-day streaming and theatrical releases are acceptable.)

The eligibility requirements mean that the list of Academy-qualifying films is smaller than the actual number of films that received theatrical releases in 2016. According to Box Office Mojo, 709 films have been released theatrically so far in 2016.

The number of Oscars contenders set records in a number of categories this year, including Best Foreign Language Film (85), Best Animated Feature (27), Best Animated Short (69) and Best Original Song (91).

Realistically, about 40 of the eligible features will end up with Oscar nominations, with another 20  or so in serious contention.

Nominations will be announced on January 24, with the 89th Academy Awards taking place on February 26.

The reminder list of productions that have qualified for the Oscars, which includes all the cast members eligible in the acting categories, is available on the Rules and Eligibility page of the Academy website.
