“Twin Peaks” creator was approached by George Lucas to direct third “Star Wars” film, but Lynch turned him down
David Lynch has a singular style and vision, as seen in his 1990 ABC series, “Twin Peaks,” and films like “Mulholland Drive” and “Blue Velvet.” Things are often bizarre and uncomfortable in his worlds, with a tinge of horror around the edges.
It would have been a strange approach to bring to the third “Star Wars” film, but George Lucas apparently did ask Lynch to direct “Return of the Jedi.” According to Lynch, he quickly turned Lucas down, understanding that it wasn't a good fit for his sensibilities as a filmmaker.
This didn't stop one enterprising Lynch fan from imagining what “Star Wars” might have looked like through Lynch's lens. The trailer for “David Lynch's Return of the Jedi” is nearly four minutes long, but it is absolutely mesmerizing. Some things make no sense, like the dashed lines from a modern road in outer space, but it definitely captures that spooky vibe Lynch fans know and love.
