Emmy Quickie: ‘Transparent’ Star Melora Hardin on That Climactic Cake Scene (Exclusive Video)

Actress tells TheWrap about how the hit Amazon dramedy thrives on freedom, camaraderie and experimentation

“Transparent” star Melora Hardin delivered a stunning performance in the second season of the Amazon dramedy, including a pivotal scene involving a pool, a cake and a meltdown.

But the Emmy nominee says that it was not easy getting the scene into its final form.

“Jill [Soloway] came up to me and said, ‘Lets put the beginning at the end and the end at the beginning. And, you know, let’s just make sure that we get to that cake part,’” she told TheWrap about working on the scene with the show’s creator. “It was really fun to just play around like that.”

Hardin explained that it’s in part that freedom to experiment and live in a scene that allows the stars of “Transparent” to excel — the show received 10 Emmy nominations this year, including acting nods for Hardin, Jeffrey Tambor, Gaby Hoffman, Judith Light and Bradley Whitford.

Soloway “has this amazing way of kind of bringing people into the show that she just loves and thinks are so talented and then kind of sets everyone free,” Hardin said. “So everybody has this feeling that they’re really valued, and that their input’s valued, and that we can play, and we can be creative.”

In particular, Hardin praised her co-star Amy Landecker, who plays her on-screen lover.

“She’s so much fun,” Hardin said, “and just has such great ability to dive right in with both feet.”
