President Trump took to Twitter early Friday morning to slam the “fake media” and suggest that he might cancel all future press briefings and replace them with written handouts “for the sake of accuracy.”

It’s interesting to see Trump so fired up to defend his surrogates after multiple reports that Press Secretary Sean Spicer is on thin ice. Spicer will return to the podium for Friday’s White House press briefing after missing most of the week because of obligations as a member of the U.S. Navy reserve. Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders filled in during Spicer’s absence.

Trump recently contradicted an earlier White House statement claiming the president fired now-former FBI Director James Comey after a memo recommending the dismissal was sent from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Instead, Trump told NBC’s Lester Holt that he had already planned the firing and requested a memo from the Department of Justice to support his decision.

Trump going on early morning Twitter tirades is nothing new, but Friday’s messages appear particularly heated. He also threatened Comey, writing he “better hope” there aren’t tapes of their previous conversations.

“He’s a showboat, he’s grandstander, the FBI has been in turmoil,” Trump said of Comey in his wide-ranging interview with Holt on Thursday. “You know that, I know that. Everybody knows that. You take a look at the FBI a year ago, it was in virtual turmoil, less than a year ago. It hasn’t recovered from that.”
