Katie Couric might not have left the building as far as CBS News is concerned -- not officially, anyway -- but she will be leaving the country.

As rumors swirl that Couric is preparing to vacate her news anchor position for CBS, the New York Times reports that Couric is shipping out Tuesday morning for Iraq, where she'll be reporting on the military and political situation nearly a decade after American forces took Baghdad.

Meanwhile Couric, whose five-year contract with CBS expires in June, is said to be juggling offers from ABC, NBC and CNN.

Couric's current network home also admits to being in "ongoing discussions" with their anchor, perhaps to retain her, perhaps just to ensure a smooth transfer of power.

"We're having ongoing discussions with Katie Couric," CBS spokeswoman Sonya McNair said. "We have no announcements to make at this time. Until we do, we will continue to decline comment on rumor and speculation."

A source familiar with Couric's situation told TheWrap last week that Couric may well remain with the network, as a CBS correspondent and daytime talk-show host.

CBS did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment.
