The J.J. Abrams sci-fi series "Fringe" has been renewed, Fox confirms to TheWrap.

According the network, the series has been picked up for another 22 episodes.

The renewal comes as a surprise to some. The series, which centers around a female FBI agent who works with an institutionalized scientist in order to explain unexplained phenomena, has struggled to find a happy home on the network, and in January was moved to an unenviable Friday at 9 p.m. time slot.

"Fringe" executive producer J.H. Wyman noted the renewal on his Twitter account, writing, "Fringe was picked up!!!! Thanks Fringedom!"

The series stars Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv and Lance Reddick.
