Starz has delayed production on the second season of "Spartacus" following a cancer diagnosis for star Andy Whitfield.

Whitfield, who plays the title role in the action drama, Tuesday said he has non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He's seeking treatment in New Zealand.

Doctors for the actor "have stated his condition is very treatable, and was detected in its early stages," Starz said.

"I'm receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me," Whitfield said.

Chris Albrecht, president and CEO of Starz, said the network's "prayers" were with the actor.

"His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time," Albrecht said.

It's not clear how long the start of production will be delayed.
