Twitter chairman Jack Dorsey has been elected to Disney’s board of directors, the company said Monday. Dorsey co-founded Twitter, and posted the first ever tweet in 2006. He served as the company’s CEO in the early years before being named chairman in 2008.

Though the level of his involvement in the company has varied over the years, as documented in Nick Bilton’s recent book, he has branded himself the visionary behind a company that now has more than 200 million monthly active users across the globe.

Dorsey also co-founded Square, a mobile payments company, in 2009.

“Jack Dorsey is a talented entrepreneur who has helped create groundbreaking new businesses in the social media and commerce spaces,” Bob Iger, CEO of Disney and chairman of the company’s board. “The perspective he brings to Disney and its Board is extremely valuable, given our strategic priorities, which include utilizing the latest technologies and platforms to reach more people and to enhance the relationship we have with our customers.”

Dorsey will stand for election with the company’s other directors in March 2014. Judith Estrin will not stand for re-election.
