Twitter to Allow More Than 140 Characters in Tweets (Report)

Company considering 10,000 character limit, according to media reports

Twitter’s 140 character limit could be no more. The company could be launching a new feature that would allow users to write messages of up to 10,000 characters.

Recode reports the feature may launch towards the end of the first quarter of 2016, and that the 10,000 character limit — which is currently the limit on Direct Messages users can send to each other — could fluctuate before the official launch.

Twitter declined to comment.

Recode reports the company is already testing a version of the new feature, which would show 140 character tweets normally, with some kind of indicator that more content is a click away.

Rumors of extended character limits first surfaced in September. There is no official launch date.
