Vice Lays Off Staff, Promotes Josh Tyrangiel to Head News

At least a dozen employees have reportedly been let go

Vice Media has promoted Josh Tyrangiel to oversee news operations across the company and announced several employees have been laid off on Tuesday.

The move puts Tyrangiel, who is the head of the brand’s upcoming HBO nightly news broadcast, in charge of VICE News as well as and Vice’s daily and weekly HBO programs, but the move will result in “at least” a dozen employees losing their jobs, according to CNN.

In addition to multiple jobs in the United States, Vice has dissolved three full-time editorial positions in the U.K.. Politico reports that Vice plans to open new divisions in San Francisco and Hong Kong in the coming months.

A Vice spokesperson issued the following statement to TheWrap: “The plan in place will expand VICE’s news offerings across digital and TV, continue the recent of wave of newsroom hires, add additional foreign bureaus, and marshal the company’s existing news divisions into one cohesive powerhouse.”
