ABC Reinstating Current Programming Department

After eliminating the department a year ago, the network is bringing back execs to oversee programs already on the air

ABC will reinstate its current programming department after eliminating it one year ago, a network insider confirmed to TheWrap.

The timetable has not been established, but "it's going to happen," the insider told TheWrap.

The current programming department, which oversees shows already on the schedule, was disbanded last June at the same time that ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson also assumed oversight over ABC Studios.

At that time, in a streamlining and cost-cutting move, it was thought that the network's development executives could also oversee shows once on the air. But ABC over the past two years has been the network putting the most new shows on the air and the thinking now is that there needs to be more specific attention given to those shows.

It has not been announced who will become the new senior VP of current programming. Kim Rozenfeld held that post until last June but was then reassigned within the Disney organization.

Once a new head of the department is selected, that person is expected to put together a staff to oversee current programming in time for the start of the fall season.
