ABC Renews ‘Rookie Blue’ After Just Three Weeks

Freshman cop show is hugely outperforming last year’s summer occupant of the 9 p.m. Thursday slot, “Grey’s Anatomy”

ABC has renewed freshman summer scripted drama "Rookie Blue" for a second season after just three weeks on the air.

The show, starring Missy Peregrym, Gregory Smith, Charlotte Sullivan and Eunuka Okuma, is averaging 7.2 million viewers and a 1.9 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic.

Its total viewer average this summer is just 500,000 less than repeats of CBS regular-season hit dramas "CSI: Miami" and "Criminal Minds." And its 18-49 score is higher in the demo than all of CBS' strongly repeating summer procedural dramas.

"Rookie Blue" is averaging 4.2 million more viewers and an 18-49 rating that is 125 percent higher than last summer's occupant of the 9 p.m. Thursday timeslot: repeats of "Grey's Anatomy."

"Rookie Blue," which follows the lives of five inexperienced rookie police officers in a big-city station, was developed by Thump Inc. and produced in partnership with EI Entertainment. It's shot in Canada, where it also airs.

"We're very pleased that the show has connected with viewers, especially considering the challenge of finding an audience in the summer, and are excited to pick it up for a second season," said Quinn Taylor, senior VP of movies, miniseries and acquisitions, ABC Entertainment Group.
