HBO has ordered two new family drama pilots from Oscar-winning filmmakers, TheWrap has learned.

The network announced Monday that it has picked up the pilots “Succession,” from Adam McKay (“The Big Short”), and “Mogadishu, Minnesota,” from Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”).

“Succession,” written by “Veep” alum Jesse Armstrong and directed by McKay, follows the saga of a fictional American global-media family that is not only rich and powerful but also powerfully dysfunctional. The drama will explore family loyalty, international business and the perils of power in the 21st Century.

Armstrong and McKay will serve as executive producers alongside Will Ferrell, Kevin Messick and Frank Rich.

“Mogadishu, Minnesota” is described as “a family drama that grapples with what it means to be American — among the Somalis of Minneapolis.”

Somali poet and rapper K’naan Warsame will write, direct and executive produce the pilot. Bigelow is set to executive produce alongside Carolyn Strauss.
