The alien-attack movie "Attack the Block" and the documentaries "Building Hope" and "Love Shines" won the final three audience awards at the 2011 South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival, SXSW announced on Saturday.
Winning films in four other sections were named on Tuesday at the festival's awards ceremony, but awards for the Lone Star States, 24 Beats Per Second and Midnight Feature sections were held until the final day of SXSW.
The Midnight Feature award, which is open to films in both the Midnighters and SFantastic sections, went to director Joe Cornish's "Attack the Block" (left), a London-set action-adventure in which a gang of tough inner-city kids have to fight off alien invaders.
The award for the Lone Star States section, which consists of films with a special connection to Texas, was given to Turk Pipkin's "Building Hope," which chronicles how Pipkin and the Nobelity Project endured "drought, flood and fundraising challenges" to build the first high school in a rural area of Kenya.
"Love Shines," the winner from the 24 Beats Per Second section of music-themed films, follows singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith as he records an album with producer Bob Rock and muses on his art and career. Douglas Arrowsmith directed.
The SXSW Film Festival, which began on March 11, concludes on Saturday. The SXSW Music Festival, the best-known of the three SXSW festivals (the third being SXSW Interactive), finishes on Sunday.
