Caitlyn Jenner Halloween Costume Sparks Internet Outrage: ‘Disgraceful,’ ‘Transphobic’ (Updated)

Costume company under fire after costume gets torn to shreds on social media

A Halloween costume depicting former Olympian and reality TV personality Caitlyn Jenner has sparked outrage on social media, with many people expressing their distaste for the offering.

A unisex costume being offered by Anytime Costumes recreates Jenner’s look when she debuted as a woman on the cover of Vanity Fair in June, complete with shorts, a padded top, a wig, and a sash that reads, “Call Me Caitlyn.”

Twitter blew with expressions of anger about the costume, with some calling it “disgraceful,” “hurtful,” and “transphobic.”

How can one explain how wrong it is to sell a “men’s” Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume without burning everything in the process – Nick Toppel (@SleepPatterns) August 25, 2015

Anytime Costumes responded to the backlash with a statement. It reads:

“anytimecostumes.com is all about fun. We have all kinds of over-the-top costumes on buzzing themes, characters, and celebrities. If it’s a hot topic, we are going to have a costume about it! Call us an equal opportunist – we satirize everyone! We are in the business of taking a fun approach at the BIGGEST trends in our society, and let people put on a costume and be part of those trends.

We are not only an equal opportunity satirist but also an equal opportunity employer. We have an extremely diverse employee base: we have staff from all ethnic backgrounds and age groups; we have men AND women in senior positions; we also have LGBT employees. We certainly do NOT promote or condone any acts of discrimination. That’s just not who we are.

We appreciate all the feedback we got. We welcome open dialogues and we respect opinions from all perspectives. As for our stand: we believe in the spirit of Halloween and costume parties – these are the times when people can be irreverent and make a parody of everyone and anyone – even themselves!”

Correction: The costume pictured was originally attributed to Spirit Halloween, which also has a Caitlyn costume. TheWrap regrets the error.
