Cinema Audio Society Likes the Sound of ‘Birdman’

Television sound-mixing awards go to “Game of Thrones,” “Sherlock” and “Modern Family”

“Birdman” was named the best-mixed film of 2014 at the Cinema Audio Society’s 51st annual CAS Awards on Saturday night in Los Angeles.

Four of the five Oscar nominees in the sound mixing category were competing at the CAS Awards, with Alejandro Inarritu’s wild, percussive black comedy going up against “American Sniper,” “Interstellar” and “Unbroken.” The fifth CAS nominee, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” was replaced by “Whiplash” in the Oscar noms.

“Big Hero 6” won the award for mixing in an animated film. In the television categories, the winners were “Game of Thrones,” “Sherlock: His Last Vow,” “Modern Family” and the music show “Foo Fighters Sonic Highways: Los Angeles.”

“Boyhood” director Richard Linklater received the 2015 Filmmaker Award, while the Career Achievement Award went to David Macmillan.

The ceremony took place at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Douglas McIntyre hosted the show, with presenters including directors Christopher Nolan and Rory Kennedy.

On Sunday night, the sound editors will have their turn with the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards.
