Michael Showalter is set to direct “Serendipity” for Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax, TheWrap has learned. The film is described as a modern retelling of the beloved cult classic romantic comedy.

Marc Klein, who wrote the original 2001 feature, will pen the new screenplay. Casting is currently underway.

The original 2001 romantic comedy, starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, centers on Jonathan and Sara, who fall in love one fateful night, are separated by circumstance and then spend years trying to find one another again.

“I am so honored and excited to get to live inside this iconic funny, romantic and intelligent world that Marc Klein has created,” Showalter said in a statement to TheWrap. “This new ‘Serendipity’ is not a remake or even a reboot, I’d say it’s more of a rebuttal. Same title. New characters. New story and new ideas about love and relationships. Me and Jordana and everyone at Semi-Formal relish the opportunity to make another film with the whole team at Amazon MGM as well as our new partners at Miramax.”

The film will be produced by Showalter and Jordana Mollick for Semi-Formal Productions, alongside Simon Fields, who produced the original film. Emily Crook is overseeing the project for Semi-Formal. Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, and Thom Zadra will executive produce for Miramax. Arianna D’Andrea will oversee the project for Miramax. Klein is also executive producing the project.

Showalter is repped by United Talent Agency, Artists First, Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, and 42West. Klein is repped by 3 Arts Entertainment, United Talent Agency and Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein.
