Shelley Fabares, an American actress and singer who rose to fame as a teenager playing Mary on “The Donna Reed Show,” died Saturday in Los Angeles. She was 82 years old.
Fabares’ death was confirmed in a statement to media written by her family.
“To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter and comfort,” read the statement. “She was a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, family member and loyal friend whose warmth, generosity, humor and grace made an enduring difference in the lives of everyone who knew her. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued and cared for.”
Fabares’ acting career spanned six decades, with her first credit coming in a 1955 episode of “The Loretta Young Show” at the age of 10. She achieved generational fame with her role as Mary Stone in “The Donna Reed Show,” the teenage daughter to characters played by Donna Reed and Carl Betz. As a main cast member through the first five seasons and a guest player across the final three, Fabares appeared in more than 190 episodes of the highly popular ABC sitcom.
Her prominence in “The Donna Reed Show” led to a number of film credits, most notably including three instances in the ’60s playing love interest to Elvis Presley, in “Girl Happy,” “Spinout” and “Clambake.” Her popularity as a teen idol also led to a recording career, with her performance of “Johnny Angel” hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962 along with the release of three studio albums across the early ’60s.
Fabares remained a mainstay on television as she grew older. After “The Donna Reed Show,” she was a main cast member of NBC’s physician sitcom “The Practice,” which ran for two seasons in the ’70s. She found her most enduring gig in 1989 with ABC’s “Coach,” playing the wife to Craig T. Nelson’s lead NCAA football coach. The series ran for nine seasons and Fabares earned two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for her performance.
Other notable television guest credits included “One Day at a Time” (which yielded a single-season role as a main cast member), “The Rockford Files,” “The Twilight Zone,” “Mork & Mindy,” “The Love Boat” and “Murder, She Wrote.” Younger generations were introduced to Fabares through her voice role as Martha Kent on the 90’s run of “Superman: The Animated Series.”
Born Jan. 19, 1944 in Santa Monica, Calif., Michele Ann Marie Fabares worked as a child actor from her earliest years and was the niece of actress and dancer Nanette Fabray. She married recording producer Lou Adler in 1964, before the pair divorced in 1980. She later wed “M*A*S*H” star Mike Farrell in 1984 and the two remained married until her death.
Fabares is survived by Farrell and her stepchildren, Erin and Michael.
