David Letterman: Trump Actions ‘Smack of Racism’

“It’s all fun, it’s all a circus, it’s all a rodeo, until it starts to smack of racism. And then it’s no longer fun”

David Letterman said Donald Trump's latest antics "smack of racism," while interviewing Trump friend Dr. Phil.

Letterman said he was particularly offended by the potential presidential candidate questioning how Obama got into Columbia University and Harvard Law School, and whether Obama wrote his first book himself. He said the questions were "very, very insulting."

"My point is, it’s all fun, it’s all a circus, it’s all a rodeo, until it starts to smack of racism. And then it’s no longer fun,” Letterman said.

“So you thought it was racist?” Dr. Phil asked.

“Well, yes,” Letterman replied.

Letterman later asked Dr. Phil: "You know Donald Trump, in fact, do you consider him to be a racist?"

“I do not,” Dr. Phil said.

“How can you say things like that if you’re not a racist?” Letterman asked.

“I don’t think he always thinks everything through,” Dr. Phil said. “I'm not sure he sat down and said let's see how this could be spun. I  think sometimes he’s a little from the hip, and I don’t think he has a racist bone in this body.”

Letterman also said that if Trump ever returns to his show, — "and I'm not that we want him back on the show under those circumstances" — Trump "ought to be prepared to apologize just for that kind of behavior."
