Emmys Merge Miniseries, Movies Categories

Academy cites shortage of miniseries nominees

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will merge the categories of outstanding miniseries and outstanding made for television movies, citing a decline in the number of entries in the miniseries category.

The move was approved by the Television Academy’s Board of Governors, which announced the decision Thursday.

Emmy Awards rules say that any category with less than five entries for two successive years will be reviewed by the Board of Governors, which can delete the category, consolidate it, or leave it alone. The number of miniseries nominees has declined in recent years.

The consolidation completes a consolidation that began years ago with the mergers of other miniseries and movies for television categories, such as outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or movie. It also follows the same course as the WGA, DGA and PGA awards.

The new category will feature the top six vote-getters in the first round of balloting. T

The Academy also voted to allow miniseries to be entered in the outstanding original main title theme music category.

It also reconfigured outstanding cinematography for a half-hour series and outstanding cinematography for a one hour series into outstanding cinematography for a multi-camera series and outstanding cinematography for a single-camera series.
