The potential spinoff of “Fresh Off the Boat” is one step closer to becoming a reality, with Vir Das and Preity G. Zinta joining the ABC sitcom as the characters who would form the basis of the new show.

The duo is set to guest star in an upcoming episode of the series as the parents of a girl who attends school with Hudson Yang’s character, Eddie.

As previously reported, a spinoff of “Fresh Off the Boat” centered on an Indian-American family is being eyed at the network for next season. “Fresh Off the Boat” writer Rachna Fruchbom is attached to write the comedy under her overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television.

The episode featuring Das and Zinta, titled “Magic Motor Inn,” is set to be shooting next month to air later this season, though it will not serve as a backdoor pilot for the spinoff. Should the network move forward with the spinoff, it would need to undergo the regular pilot process next year.

“Fresh off the Boat” entered its sixth season in September.
