Barbara Kean is a living, breathing “bundle of contradictions” on Fox hit “Gotham” — which the exact reason actress Erin Richards said she fell in love with the Batman-prequel character.

“Poor Babs,” Richards joked with TheWrap, speaking of her gun-wielding, hard-drinking character’s recent broadcast about-face, who was first introduced to Fox viewers as new Det. Jim Gordon’s (Ben McKenzie) main squeeze.

“She just didn’t understand how dangerous this world that Jim was living in was, for him and her,” Richards said. “From this episode onwards, it’s all about her battling all of those demons that were inside of her.”

On-screen and in Gotham City, Kean is going to go away for a spell, but not for long.

“You’ll see her, but you might not see her in her apartment for a while,” Richards said.

When TheWrap asked Richards if that means Barbara is heading back to Det. Renee Montoya (Victoria Cartagena), with whom Kean shared a tryst, she hinted that it may head in that direction

“She may dip back into that relationship,” Richards teased. “She’s looking for somewhere to be safe.”

That said, don’t fret: For if the Batman text is to be followed to a “T,” Ms. Kean will end up as Mrs. Barbara Gordon one day.

“Gotham” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
