IFC Films has acquired the North American rights to the drama “Days and Nights,” starring Katie Holmes, the company announced Thursday.

William Hurt, Allison Janney and Ben Wishaw co-star in writer-director Christian Camargo’s film inspired by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov’s play “The Seagull.”

Set in rural New England in the 1980s, “Days and Nights” is centered around a fading movie star who brings her paramour to her lakeside estate to visit her ailing brother and son, a fledgling artist, over Memorial Day Weekend. Reckless desire leads to a disastrous turn of events, which leads the family from dysfunction to heartbreak.

The film, which premiered at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January, will be released theatrically and on demand on Sept. 26.

The deal was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, SVP of acquisitions from Sundance Selects/IFC Films with ICM Partners on behalf of the filmmakers.

“Christian Camargo has crafted a beautiful film with fantastic performances from every single actor in the film,” Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects/IFC Films, said in a statement.
