Cinemax has canceled the Clive Owen period medical drama “The Knick” after two seasons.

The network announced on Thursday that it would not be moving forward with more episodes of the series from executive producer and director Steven Soderbergh.

The news comes over a year after the Season 2 finale, in which Owen’s character Dr. Thackery, appeared to die while attempting to perform surgery on himself.

Cinemax had reportedly toyed with the idea of rebooting the series for Season 3, set in the same hospital during a different time period with a new cast. Ultimately, the network chose not to order additional episodes.

“After a critically acclaimed two-season run of ‘The Knick’ on Cinemax, we will not be going forward with additional episodes of the series,” said Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming. “Despite our pride in and affection for the series, as well as our respect for and gratitude towards Steven Soderbergh and his team, we have decided to return Cinemax to its original primetime series fare of high-octane action dramas, many of which will be internationally co-produced.”

The show followed the surgeons, nurses and staff of the Knickerbocker Hospital in 1900. Eve Hewson and Andre Holland also starred on the series. Jack Amiel and Michael Begler served as co-creators, writers and executive producers.
